💼 CAREER TUESDAY | Never Have Only One Door 🚪
Many of us grew up hearing some version of this career advice:
✔️ Get a good job.
✔️ Work hard.
✔️ Be loyal.
✔️ Keep moving up.
✔️ Build a stable career.
There’s still a lot of wisdom in that.
But today’s workplace can change quickly.
Companies restructure.
Industries evolve.
Technology changes jobs.
Leadership changes.
Budgets disappear.
Entire professions can be transformed.
So here’s an important question:
If your current job disappeared tomorrow, what other door could you open?
That isn’t a question about fear.
It’s a question about preparation.
🚪 NEVER HAVE ONLY ONE DOOR
Think about your career as a hallway with multiple doors.
Your current job may be Door #1.
But what could Door #2 be?
Or Door #3?
Consider these possibilities:
🔵 SAME SKILL, NEW COMPANY
Could another employer benefit from what you already know?
🟢 SAME SKILL, NEW INDUSTRY
Could your expertise transfer to healthcare, technology, education, finance, government, manufacturing, or another industry?
🟠 NEW SKILL, ADJACENT ROLE
What related career could you move into with some additional learning?
🔴 YOUR OWN INCOME
Could something you know become consulting, freelancing, teaching, coaching, or a small business?
🟣 SOMETHING YOU HAVEN’T DISCOVERED YET
Are you learning enough to recognize opportunities that didn’t exist five years ago?
If you can only see one door today, don’t panic.
Start building another one.
🛠️ BUILD YOUR CAREER SAFETY NET WHILE THINGS ARE GOING WELL
You don’t need to quit your job.
You don’t need five careers.
And you don’t need to live constantly expecting something bad to happen.
You simply want to create options.
Start with:
🧠 BUILD PORTABLE SKILLS
Develop skills that have value across employers and industries.
🤝 BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
Stay connected with people beyond your current company.
📈 WATCH THE MARKET
Pay attention to which industries, roles, and skills are growing.
🧪 RUN SMALL EXPERIMENTS
Take a course. Volunteer. Teach. Freelance. Build a project. Explore an idea.
💰 BUILD FINANCIAL BREATHING ROOM
When possible, strengthen your savings so every career decision isn’t driven by financial fear.
The goal isn’t to constantly look for another job.
The goal is to know that your current job isn’t your ONLY possible future.
🚪🚪 THE TWO-DOOR CHALLENGE
Take 15 minutes this week.
Write down:
🚪 DOOR #1:
What am I doing now?
Then identify:
🚪 DOOR #2:
What is one realistic alternative I could pursue if circumstances changed?
Maybe it’s:
➡️ Another employer
➡️ A different industry
➡️ An adjacent profession
➡️ Consulting or freelancing
➡️ Entrepreneurship
➡️ Teaching
➡️ A new specialty
Then ask:
“What ONE thing could I do this month to make Door #2 more realistic?”
Learn something.
Meet someone.
Research something.
Build something.
Save something.
You don’t have to walk through Door #2 today.
Just make sure the door exists.
